Webinar 2:

INSIGHTS AND ACTION POINTS from webinar on
GENDER LENS ON FINANCING FOR DEVELOPMENT:
TAX JUSTICE FOR GENDER EQUALITY

On September 3rd, 2020, Feminist Task Force and K.U.L.U. – Women and Development hosted our second webinar, Gender Lens on Financing for Development – Tax Justice for Gender Equality.

The webinar brought new and insightful information on the links between tax justice and the Financing for Development (FfD) agenda and process and the impacts on the lives of women and girls.

A brief summary of our excellent panel:

  • Caroline Othim, Campaigns & Policy Coordinator – Africa, Global Alliance for Tax Justice, Co-coordinator Gender & Tax Working Group, Kenya highlighted taxation as the only sustainable source of finance for public services; the need by developing countries to focus their energies on domestic resource mobilization through taxation; and how amounts lost to harmful tax practices can be used to invest in FFD and in quality, public services.

  • Kathleen Lahey, Professor and Queen's National Scholar, Faculty of Law, Queen's University, Co-director, Feminist Legal Studies Queen's, Canada

  • Resina Katafono, Economic Affairs Officer, Financing for Sustainable Development Office, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs focused on gender and domestic public finance by addressing the Addis Ababa Action Agenda: Commitments and Follow-Up, gender responsive budgeting (GRB), the gendered implications of tax, the Financing for Sustainable Development Report (FSDR) Recommendations and the impact of COVID-19.

  • Gea Meijers, Coordinator, Women in Development Europe Plus (WIDE+) stressed the importance of integrating gendered tax recommendations into other agendas where macro-economic policies are shaped – especially looking at multilateral spaces and regional policies, next to the UN as a global space where the Financing for Development agenda is shaped as well as the Beijing+25 Platform for Action.

The webinar was furthermore recorded and an edited version will be distributed as soon as possible.
